Barbadians will enjoy a full slate of the traditional events for this year’s Crop Over Festival as more details will be fine-tuned following consultations with stakeholders.
Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office with responsibility for Culture, Senator Dr. Shantal Munro-Knight, made the disclosure last Friday at a post-Cabinet media briefing at Parliament.
Senator Munro-Knight added: “We will be returning to the full gamut of the Crop Over calendar that we are accustomed to. That means that this year, unlike last year…Junior Kadooment will be on the Calendar. Last year, we moved to Pandemonium, and that was extremely successful, so that will return. We will not have the Calvacades, but we will keep this Crop Over Sweet Limes again, which was one of the features that we had last year that was extremely successful.”
She also pointed out that the Division, and by extension masquerade leaders, would again be working with primary and secondary schools to assist with costume design to bring about the community involvement in the sector.
The Minister also disclosed that Cabinet had also approved the calendar of events for the Season of Emancipation in which the Crop Over Festival will fall.
Senator Munro-Knight gave a synopsis of some of the events to be staged, which includes the launch of the season on April 14, with the commemoration of the Bussa rebellion, by way of a documentary aired on that date.
Other events on the cards include Marcus Garvey Day and Jackie Opel Day. The Season of Emancipation runs from Friday, April 14, to Sunday, August 27.
