The Barbados Fire Service was once named the Bridgetown Fire Company. It was initially part of the Police Department and was located at the corner of James and Coleridge Streets in Bridgetown.
In 1950, a property was purchased at Probyn Street, Bridgetown, which became the new fire station. In 1955, the Barbados Fire Brigade, consisting of one station, was established through an Act of Parliament. In 1960, the name was changed to the Barbados Fire Service.
The BFS’ headquarters is currently on Level Five of the General Post Office Building, Cheapside, Bridgetown, but will be relocated to The Pine, St. Michael. The ongoing relocation project is part of a larger effort to house the Barbados Fire Service headquarters, the relocated Bridgetown Fire Station, and the headquarters for the Emergency Ambulance Service.
