Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Kerrie Symmonds, has pledged to deepen the long-standing diplomatic ties with India in areas of climate change, renewable energy, and other areas of cooperation.
Mr. Symmonds gave the undertaking yesterday while underscoring the importance of the partnership with Barbados, during a ceremony at State House to present Barbados’ highest national honour – the Honorary Freedom of Barbados, to Minister of State for External Affairs and Textiles, Shri Pabitra Margherita. It was attended by Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley; India’s High Commissioner to Barbados, Shri Subhash Prasad Gupta; and other officials.
Mr. Margherita collected the honour on behalf of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, who was recognised by the Barbados Government in last year’s Independence celebrations for the compassion and humanity which he showed to Barbadians during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Minister Symmonds added: “… We are going to be having serious discussions about deepening the partnership with India. And there are some areas which I believe you will be able to anticipate. We are going to be talking about climate change and the renewable energy partnership.
“India is a leader in renewable energy, and this is a route that we have committed ourselves to, as you well know. Equally, a lot of work is being done in this country in pharmaceuticals, and we are partnering with India in that regard. A lot of the regulatory frameworks, as we begin our first steps towards being a country that is engaged in pharmaceuticals production, will be done in partnership with India.
He also mentioned Government’s plans to establish an embassy in India. “There’s also the question for us to diversify some of our supply chains and to build connections commercially with India. And later this year, Barbados is going to be reaching out to India, and we will establish a diplomatic presence there. Those are some of the discussions that we are going to be having.
“As we expand our diplomatic footprint around the world, we do so with a view to broadening not only the country’s opportunities politically and diplomatically, but economically, commercially, and financially as well,” the Minister said.
Mr. Symmonds stressed that Barbados remained “indebted that India, at the time perhaps of our greatest need since Independence, was willing to come to the assistance not only of Barbados, but by extension this region, with a very generous display of partnership and cooperation to these countries in the Caribbean”.
Meanwhile, Minister Margherita thanked the President, Her Excellency, The Most Honourable Dame Sandra Mason; Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley; and the people of Barbados for the prestigious honour.
Mr. Margherita continued: “Prime Minister Modi’s leadership, characterised by empathy and decisive actions and initiatives, played a crucial role in the pandemic by fostering support among nations…. This award is not just a recognition of India’s leadership, but a testament to our shared commitment to international cooperation, solidarity, and mutual support, especially during challenging times.”
India’s Minister of State for External Affairs stressed that the two countries had built a robust partnership underscored by continuous engagement and development initiatives, and added that bilateral relations “have reached to new heights under the present charismatic leadership” of Prime Ministers Modi and Mottley.
“As we go forward, let us continue to build on this foundation of trust and cooperation and embrace new opportunities of collaboration and work together towards a more resilient and prosperous people for a prosperous future for our peoples,” Mr. Margherita stated. (PR/GIS)
