Barbados Observes Child Abuse Awareness & Prevention Month

Child Abuse Awareness and Prevention Month was launched yesterday with the commitment to recognise and continuously address child abuse prevention during the month of April 2024.

This promise came from Board Member of the Child Care Board (CCB), Carl Applewhaite, as he spoke at a press briefing to launch the month’s activities at the Warrens Office Complex, Warrens, St. Michael.

Mr. Applewaithe, who was representing the Chairman of the CCB, noted it was the third year Barbados would be joining the international community in such an observance.

He reminded all gathered that the CCB’s mission is to protect and care for every child, through advocacy, counselling, and empowering the family, and where necessary provide alternate families and support in an environment of trust with loyalty and competencies.

Explaining that the Board had a legal and moral responsibility to act to protect these children, he stressed: “The reality is that every Barbadian has a responsibility to protect those who cannot protect themselves, and in this case – children – who may be at the risk of abuse and/or neglect.”

He noted that on this premise the Board would continue its efforts to educate Barbadians as to what abuse looks like; encourage Barbadians to report instances of abuse and reassure the island’s youth that “they are in a safe space where they can find comfort”.

Mr. Applewaithe also reminded those gathered that the Child Protection Bill is an example of the legal framework which is necessary for the CCB to continue its efforts and safeguard children.

As he urged all Barbadians to join with the Board in bringing awareness to the importance of protecting children and promoting a safe environment for them to thrive, he stressed: “If you see it, if you hear it, I want you to report it because some child, somewhere, is dependent on you.”

The theme for the month is Our Children Deserve to be Safe; There is No Excuse; Let Us Protect them. According to Director of the CCB, RoseAnn Richards, activities will include outreach efforts at several supermarkets across the island; discussions and seminars at schools, churches, and community organisations; “Trivia Tuesday”, every Tuesday throughout the month; the walk against Child Abuse; and every Friday throughout the month, the public will be requested to wear the colour blue.
