Boosting Small Businesses: Expanded Access to Credit and Grants
By Deanzer Roberts
Small businesses, the backbone of the Barbadian economy, are set to receive a major boost following the government’s announcement of expanded access to credit and grants. In his 2025 budget speech, Minister Ryan Straughn outlined new funding mechanisms aimed at ensuring that micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) can thrive in a competitive economic environment.
With many businesses still recovering from the economic setbacks of the past few years, this initiative provides a much-needed injection of capital to help local entrepreneurs expand their operations, innovate, and remain resilient in the face of global economic challenges. The government has pledged an additional $100 million in funding to be distributed through the Small Business Development Fund and newly established financial assistance programs.
Under this plan, new entrepreneurs will have access to startup funding at historically low interest rates, enabling them to take bold steps in business without being burdened by restrictive financial obligations. Furthermore, struggling small businesses will be provided with emergency grants to help stabilize operations and prevent closures. To complement these financial measures, the initiative includes mentorship programs, business development training, and streamlined application processes to ensure swift and efficient access to these resources.
“Our MSMEs drive innovation, employment, and community development. By providing them with financial resources and training, we are laying the foundation for long-term economic sustainability,” Minister Straughn said.
Industry leaders have welcomed the move, stating that it will strengthen the entrepreneurial ecosystem and encourage young Barbadians to pursue business ventures with greater confidence. The government anticipates that this investment will lead to an estimated 5,000 new business registrations in the next fiscal year, creating employment opportunities and enhancing economic diversification in the process.
To ensure the success of this initiative, a new business support unit will be established within the Ministry of Small Business Development. This unit will provide hands-on assistance with grant applications, offer free financial advisory services, and host workshops to educate entrepreneurs on best practices in business management.
A key component of this strategy is also the facilitation of digital transformation among small businesses. The government will provide funding to support MSMEs in developing e-commerce platforms, improving cybersecurity, and adopting digital payment solutions to enhance competitiveness in an increasingly online marketplace.
With these measures, the government expects to see a surge in entrepreneurship, job creation, and a more vibrant business sector, positioning Barbados as a prime destination for business growth in the region.
