Combermere School off to a flier at BSSAC Field Events

With four Gold medal performances on Day 1, the Combermere School (CS) got off to an excellent start to the 2023 Powerade-Dasani Barbados Secondary Schools Athletic Championships at Harrison College on Monday March 13th.

Gold in the Under-20 Boys long jump by Teon Haynes, the Girls Discus under20 by Shelanie Augustin, the Boys javelin Under-17 by R’Jai Gittens and a record breaking performance by Jayden Walcott in the Junior Boys Shot Put. 

Of the eight field events contested Combermere School took home half on day 1 and a third place by Jaden Dowridge in the under-17 boys javelin. 

There was no catching the record breaking Walcott who set the new record at 14.95m replacing the old record which stood at 14.44m. 

A distant second was Seth Smith from Queen’s College (QC) with 10.87m. 

Other winners on the day saw Harrison College’s (HC) Shania Thomas winning the Under-20 Girls long jump with a leap of 5.52m, while Ayden Greendige from QC won the Boys Under-20 discuss with 41.87m and Chloe Blackman from the Alleyne school (AS) won the Junior Girls Shot put with 9.59m.

R’Jai Gittens (CS) was trailing for most of the competition until he produced the title winning throw on his final attempt. Gittens mark of 43.46m replaced his previous best of 39.82m for victory. 

Second place went to Alexander’s Oliver Gooding who had previously been leading the competition as the only one above 41 metres. Gooding final mark of 43.17m earned him second, while Jaden Dowridge (CS) with 40.73m was third.

Haynes (CS) won the Boys Under-20 long jump with 7.02m on his final attempt, while Joshua Dottin from the Lodge School (LS) was second with 6.81m and Adrain Maynard (AS) was third with 6.39m.

Augustin won the Girls Under-20 Discus with 31.74m, while Nyima Rogers (Coleridge and Parry) was second 31.44m and Jazaria Bovell (QC) third 30.66m
