Dr. Browne Pays Tribute To Late Dr. Carissa Etienne

It is with deep sorrow that I extend my heartfelt condolences on the passing of Director Emeritus Dr. Carissa F. Etienne.

Dr. Etienne’s remarkable leadership as the Director of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) and Regional Director of the World Health Organization (WHO) for the Americas has left an indelible mark on the field of public health.

Her unwavering commitment and tireless efforts have not only shaped the trajectory of health in the Americas but have also significantly impacted the global health community.

Under Dr. Etienne’s steadfast guidance, PAHO achieved monumental milestones, particularly during the unprecedented challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. Her dedication to the health and well-being of the people in the Americas was evident in her leadership during crises such as Zika and chikungunya epidemics, cholera and yellow fever outbreaks, and her instrumental role in eliminating the endemic transmission of measles, rubella, and congenital rubella syndrome.

Dr. Etienne’s legacy extends beyond the management of infectious diseases; she played a pivotal role in advancing legislative and regulatory mechanisms to address non-communicable diseases. Her efforts in strengthening national health systems and working towards universal health have left a lasting impact, reflected in the significant progress achieved during her tenure.

In November 2022, Dr. Carissa Etienne, a national of Dominica, was recognised in Barbados for her contribution to the fight against COVID-19, with the Honorary Freedom of Barbados Award “for her leadership team and friendship to Barbados during the darkest days of the COVID-19 pandemic”.

As we remember Dr. Carissa F. Etienne, we acknowledge the loss of a great public health champion. Her visionary leadership, commitment to reducing health inequalities, and dedication to people-centered care have set a standard for excellence in global health.

During this challenging time, our thoughts and prayers are with Dr. Etienne’s family, friends, and all those who had the privilege of working alongside her. The global health community mourns the loss of an extraordinary individual whose contributions will be remembered and cherished.

May Dr. Carissa F. Etienne’s legacy continue to inspire future generations in the pursuit of a healthier and more equitable world. (PR/GIS)
