Guyana Urges CARICOM to Engage US on Threat of Visa Sanctions

Guyana’s Vice President, Bharrat Jagdeo, has urged Caribbean Community leaders to jointly engage with the US on the implications of visa sanctions against governments that use Cuba’s overseas medical missions.

The US has announced that it will not issue visas to foreign government officials who support and benefit from the medical programme.

This includes current or former Cuban government officials and individuals involved in the Cuban labour export programme, particularly its overseas medical missions.

The policy also applies to the immediate family of such persons.

Like several other countries in the region, Guyana has long benefited from importing nurses and other medical professionals from Cuba to fill shortages in their public healthcare systems.

News Source Guyana reports that Jagdeo believes the issue has the potential to significnatly impact countries across the Caribbean.
