Jonathan Jones digs deep for Commonwealth bronze

Jonathan Jones showed his power and endurance when he won the Bronze medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games moments before the gold medal performance by Sada Williams.

Jones who had been leaving everything on the track knew he had to pass at least one athlete on the front straight in order to stand on the podium.

Running in the men’s 400m, Jones had to change his race plan after the runner on his outside from Kenya got off to a good start and he was unable to make up the stagger as he would like inside the first 150m.

It looked like a three-man race on the front straight and Jones may have thought he could get the silver as he started to pull up and pass the Kenyan athlete. But with a blinding turn of speed Zambia’s Muzala Samukonga sprinted past all three of the front runners to win in 44.66 secs. Jones did indeed get pass the Kenyan and he finished second in 44.89 secs. With Williams running immediately after him Jones waited at the side of the track and after she crossed the line for the gold ran to drape his teammate in the Barbados flag. The two athletes were also greeted by Sir Austin Sealy moments after the medal ceremony.
