Kerri-Ann Cumberbatch’s dedication leads to new role at Sandals Barbados
Kerri-Ann Cumberbatch’s journey with Sandals Barbados can be describe as an example of the phrase “hard work often pays off”. Joining the company in 2013 as bartender, Kerri-Ann has risen through the ranks and was recently promoted to assistant club sandals manager.
Kerri-Ann is one of several team members who has been with Sandals from its entry into the island. A graduate of the Barbados Community College’s Hospitality Institute she notes that Sandals Barbados served as her introduction to the hospitality sector.
“After leaving college, I was in several customer service driven roles, however Sandals was my first taste of the hotel industry. I thoroughly enjoyed the exposure gained as a bartender as I interacted with various guests and team members, learning about different countries and cultures. I was later promoted to junior club sandals supervisor which is a more behind the scenes role.” Kerri-Ann notes.
Kerri-Ann was able to build a close relationship with her junior concierge team and always led by example.
“I made sure that my team was confident in carrying out any role in the department. We would often chat and I would try to motivate and prepare them to take over my position should the opportunity arise. “
Kerri-Ann admits that she did have some doubts about her future in the sector. She says when asked during her initial interview where she say herself in 10 years, she jokingly replied as a manager, not knowing that this would be fulfilled 10 years later. Kerri-Ann adds that her time at Sandals Barbados has taught her to believe in herself and her abilities. She is now looking forward to her new role.
“Sandals provides several opportunities for professional and personal growth through its training programmes. I was exposed to the Elite Services training during a six week stay at Sandals South Coast in Jamaica. I therefore, see this promotion as another step in my professional development and I will endeavor to learn from my peers and fellow managers as I prepare myself for new positions, especially with the planned arrival of Beaches on the island.”
Meanwhile, Hotel Manager Nicholas Jordan describes Kerri-Ann as a dedicated employee and one who has never shied away from a challenge.
“It has been a pleasure to work alongside Kerri-Ann and over the years, she has always been one to jump in and assist whenever she sees a need. Her growth from a bartender to the now assistant club sandals manager stands as a testament to her commitment to each role she has undertaken within the resort. Kerri-Ann is not only a team leader but more importantly she is a team player. She is someone who can be counted on to provide memorable service to both guests and her peers.”
Kerri-Ann has also captured several Sandals Prestige Awards over the years including the Pacesetter Award in 2016 and the Supervisor of the Year in 2018 and 2019. (PR)
