Persons 10 years and over are invited to sign up for this year’s Operation Save Our Selves (S.O.S.) programme hosted by the National Conservation Commission (NCC).
The learn to swim programme can accommodate approximately 100 persons and will commence on Wednesday, July 19, and run until Wednesday, August 23. Classes will be held every Wednesday from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. over a six-week period at Browne’s Beach (near the Beach Facility).

Operation S.O.S. forms part of the NCC’s community outreach and public education programme.
Participants will engage in discussions on drowning prevention, the do’s and don’ts of water safety, understanding currents, interpreting flags, beach signage, wind and waves, and hands-only C.P.R.
The programme will be facilitated by the Barbados Lifeguard Service, and is also designed to acquaint participants with the experience of ocean swimming and its hazards, while exposing them to an environment that will teach respect for the marine environment to promote more responsible behaviours.
On completion, participants should be able to swim, identify and understand some of the threats that may be encountered in the aquatic environment.
They are also expected to have a greater understanding and respect for the marine environment gained by daily physical contact with the environment and through lectures and discussions on pertinent marine and aquatic topics.
