Members of Parliament Encouraged To Remain Focused

Sacrificing self in the interest of the country should be the goal of every Barbadian.

President of Barbados, His Excellency, Lieutenant Colonel, the Most Honorable Jeffrey Bostic, expressed this view yesterday at the Swearing-In Ceremony of Members of Parliament, at State House.

“It is not easy agreeing to serve your country in this capacity…. It is very hard work, very tough, very demanding…. It is selfless service.

“I expect that you will perform your duties well; that you will represent the people, and that at all times you will commit to this country and to whatever the country stands for – excellence, pride [and] industry. Remain focused and make Barbados proud of you,” President Bostic said.

Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley shared that she is looking forward to building on the innovations previously started in Parliament, specifically the standing committees, and ensuring that they not only address legislation, but major issues that may be of import to the country, and for which the country’s feedback is required.

“It cannot be that the only feedback in the country is either social media or the call-in programmes, valid as both are [for] being able to capture a snapshot. I do think that the state has to have a formal process through its Parliament that allows ordinary citizens to be able to express themselves, particularly in the three areas of subcommittees – economic, social and environmental, and governance, that we have established within the context of the Parliament,” Ms. Mottley stated.
