Minister Abrahams Outlines Independence 2025 Celebrations

Minister of Home Affairs and Information, Wilfred Abrahams, today unveiled the official calendar of activities for Barbados’ 59th Anniversary of Independence during a media briefing held at Parliament Buildings, Bridgetown.

The Minister announced that Cabinet had approved the full slate of activities for November 2025, which will set the stage for next year’s historic 60th anniversary celebrations.

Among the key national events are the Independence Lighting Ceremony and Bajan Brew (November 1), the National Independence Festival of Creative Arts (NIFCA) Gala (November 16), the President’s Garden Party for Centenarians (November 18), the National Thanksgiving Service (November 23), the Independence Concert (November 28), and the Independence Day Parade and Ceremony (November 30) at Kensington Oval.

“This year’s Independence celebration is going to be something special,” Minister Abrahams said. “Barbadians are still in that feel-good mode after a successful Crop Over and CARIFESTA, and we want to keep that national pride alive. Barbados will be awash in blue, yellow and black throughout November.”

He stated that Lieutenant Colonel The Most Honourable Jeffrey Bostic will be installed as Barbados’ second President during the Independence Day Parade, which will also feature the presentation of the National Independence Insignia and Prime Minister’s Leadership Badges, followed by the finals of the Prime Minister’s Cup football competition at Kensington Oval.

Minister Abrahams noted that this year’s celebrations reflect a “whole-of-Barbados” approach that is both family-friendly and youth-oriented, with community pride and parish participation at its core. “We are inviting every Barbadian to show up, dress in their national colours and help make this the best Independence ever,” he urged.

Addressing the private sector’s role, Minister Abrahams encouraged businesses and retailers to display patriotic decor throughout November. “We’ve reached out to corporate sponsors, especially those in Bridgetown, to light up their spaces in national colours,” he explained. “While we can’t control every level of participation, we can inspire it. Independence belongs to all of us.”

He also commended the We Gatherin’ 2025 initiative for rekindling community pride across the island. “We’ve seen parish rivalry turn into parish pride,” the Minister added. “People are participating in national life again – attending events, supporting each other, and celebrating what it means to be Barbadian.”

Traffic and safety measures for the month-long celebrations will be managed collaboratively by The Barbados Police Service, the Ministry of Transport and Works and relevant agencies.

Public servants and students are also being encouraged to wear national colours each Friday in November to promote national identity and patriotic expression. “Let’s all wear our colours proudly and celebrate who we are,” Mr. Abrahams said. “This is our month, and it’s our time to shine.” (PR/GIS)
