New AG Will Continue Working On Behalf Of The People
Attorney General Wilfred Abrahams has thanked Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley for showing confidence in his ability to transition to the role of the island’s top legal administrator.
He also expressed gratitude to former Attorney General Dale Marshall for his mentorship over the years, as he prepares to start work in earnest.
Mr. Abrahams made the comments yesterday after being sworn in by President of Barbados, His Excellency, Lieutenant Colonel, The Most Honourable Jeffrey Bostic, at State House.
The Attorney General told the media: “I thank the Prime Minister for her confidence in me. It is not an easy appointment. It’s actually one of the hotter appointments. I want to thank the outgoing AG Dale Marshall. Dale has been a great mentor for me.”
Mr. Abrahams continued: “As you know, I’ve been the only person acting for Dale for the last seven years…. He has been a wonderful mentor and he’s a resource that I can still draw on, and because of his mentorship of me and my close working [relationship] with him, it’s going to be a lot easier for me and I can hit the ground running. I look forward to getting into the Ministry and bringing Barbados back on track. I will be meeting with the staff formally and I will be doing my best in the position.”
While acknowledging that there were some “hot pockets” of crime, the Attorney General stressed that the situation was not widespread but limited to a few individuals.
“I think the police have done a fantastic job over the last year or so. Oftentimes, you cannot stop people before they commit an infraction. What you can do is deal with it very quickly afterwards, and the police have an amazing record of catching people who have committed crimes. So, I look forward to working with the police…,” he said.
