Parliament Formally Constituted as MPs and Senators Take Oath
Barbados has officially constituted its new Parliament following the swearing-in of Members of Parliament and Senators during ceremonies at State House.
The formal proceedings marked the start of a new legislative term, with elected representatives and appointed Senators taking the oath of office, signing official instruments and receiving congratulations from senior state officials and family members in attendance.
MPs Urged to Uphold Excellence
Members of Parliament were sworn in before President Lt. Col. The Most Honourable Jeffrey Davidson Bostic,, who reminded them that public office demands discipline, integrity and selfless service.
He stressed that Barbados stands for excellence and urged the parliamentarians to conduct themselves in a manner that reflects the country’s values, noting that their tenure will include both good and challenging times.
Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley described the new term as promising and said the administration intends to build on foundations laid during the previous term.
She emphasized strengthening parliamentary committees to allow ordinary citizens greater access to addressing national issues and acknowledged that several younger members are entering Parliament at what she described as both a challenging and exciting time.
Government Senators Sworn In
Government Senators were also sworn in during a separate ceremony.
Among those taking the oath were Most Honourable Reginald Farley, Most Honourable Elizabeth Thompson, John King, Roshanna Trim, Kamisha Benjamin, Janelle Odle, and Ramon Alleyne.
In addressing the Senators, the President underscored that their role forms a serious part of the democratic process and contributes to ensuring that Barbados remains a safe and secure nation.
Prime Minister Mottley thanked them for accepting the opportunity to serve, noting that their appointments align with the government’s manifesto commitments. She stated that they are expected to assist in executing national programmes and will receive the necessary guidance as they undertake their duties.
Independent Senators Join Upper Chamber
Independent Senators were sworn in later, completing the composition of the Upper Chamber.
They are Jamal Slocombe, Reverend Canon Dr John Rogers, Mary-Anne Redman, Andrew Niles, Andrew Mallalieu, Ryan Forde and Dr Kenneth Connell.
The President was firm as he reminded them that independence carries responsibility, emphasizing the importance of objective review and integrity within the legislative process.
With the swearing-in of both elected Members of Parliament and appointed Senators, Barbados’ Parliament is now fully constituted and poised to begin its legislative work.
