Prime Minister Mottley Holds Talks With King Of Ashanti

It was a signal moment in Barbados’ diplomatic relations with Africa on Tuesday, when His Majesty Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the King of Ashanti, touched down on Barbadian soil for the first time, on a direct flight from Ghana. His Majesty’s visit represents the first time that the occupant of the Golden Stool has visited the Caribbean.

Following his arrival, His Majesty Asantehene paid a courtesy call on Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley at Ilaro Court. The talks focused on opportunities for further cooperation; the significance of the Reclaiming Our Atlantic Destiny Programme to both countries; airlift; and addressing the skills deficit against the backdrop of an ageing population, among other topics.

Ms. Mottley reiterated Barbados’ appreciation to Ghana for the provision of nurses, who continue to work alongside the Barbadian medical professionals in the health care system.

His Majesty, like Prime Minister Mottley, acknowledged the deep historical ties between the two countries and agreed that there were several areas where the two countries can work together successfully.

Barbados and Ghana established diplomatic ties in 1994. (PR/GIS)
