River Bay St. Lucy

This video is the second in a series that documented the impact of the Sargassum seaweed on the coastline of Barbados. The first was video taken at Skeete’s Bay St. Philip.
River Bay, located on the north coast of Barbados in the parish of St. Peter is a very popular picnic spot and many persons head to the area on weekends and public holidays.
This is an ideal lookout spot from which you can see the impressive northern coastline where the waves pound the cliffs, creating breathtaking sea sprays. Whales are occasionally spotted off this coastline.
A freshwater river from two inlets runs down to the sea from the land elevation, hence the name River Bay. At low tide, River Bay is popular for sea bathing but those unfamiliar with the area should be extremely cautious and never venture too far out to sea where the currents are strong.
In recent years the deposits of Sargassum seaweed have altered the beauty of River Bay. Picnics and beach limes are seldom kept there due to the pungent smell and ugly sight of the seaweed. Efforts to remove the tons of seaweed that have been compressed into a thick carpet is proving to be a perpetual nightmare.
The battle to reclaim the beauty of River Bay will continue and we can be assured that with the mercies of Mother Nature we will once again enjoy the ambiance of Barbados’ treasures.
