Roshanna Trim Is Barbados’ Newest Senator
Thirty-year-old Roshanna Trim is Barbados’ newest and youngest senator.
Senator Roshanna Trim was sworn in by President of Barbados, Her Excellency, The Most Honourable Dame Sandra Mason, yesterday morning at State House.
After the swearing-in ceremony, Senator Trim said she saw her appointment as a progression that she appreciates and values, and she promises to ensure that the people who have placed their faith in her will not be disappointed.
“I don’t know that I was necessarily working towards being a Senator, but I do know that I was working towards continuously offer myself in service and in leadership, and so this feels as though it is a progression,” she stated.
Ms. Trim assured the audience that she would remain committed to the communities and the people she started with. She said she plans to continue to speak to the concerns of the youth, such as education transformation, food security, and climate change.
Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley, who was present at State House, welcomed the youngest member of the Parliament, stating: “In these moments, it is important not just to be reflective but to also understand what you will stand for and what you will bring and who you shall fight for…and I hope that you will never forget those principles.
“I look forward to a stellar career of public service, and I say to you that discretion …dedicated efforts, disciplined research, those are the things that 40 years from now, when you and others are standing in the corridors of power, I expect you to pass it on to a future generation.”
Senator Trim was accompanied by her mother and brother. Her mother, Wendy Trim, stated that she gave her children a solid foundation, always encouraging them to be whatever they want to be.
“I’m very proud [to be] standing here and giving God [thanks] all the time and know she will continue to do her best,” she said.
The Senator’s brother, Rondell Trim, expressed pride at his sister’s achievement. He added: “This is a product of the work that she’s done. I don’t think that is something that she’s been looking for, but it’s something that she deserves.” (PR/GIS)
