This morning, Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley, SC., MP., and Opposition Leader Ralph Thorne, KC., MP., signed the official documents nominating former Member of Parliament, Minister of Health and Wellness and retired veteran military officer, The Most Honourable Lieutenant Colonel Jeffrey Bostic, to be Barbados’ second president.
The Prime Minister and Opposition Leader met and agreed to the nomination yesterday afternoon and completed the process with signatures this morning at Parliament. The notice was then submitted to Deputy Speaker of the House of Assembly, Neil Rowe, for official announcement. Parliament will vote on the nomination in October.
Once ratified by Parliament, Bostic’s appointment will take effect from November 30, when he will be sworn in. The appointment of current President Dame Sandra Mason ends on November 29.
Lt. Col. Bostic, affectionately known across the country as “The Colonel”, represented the City of Bridgetown in Parliament from 2013 until 2022, and won wide national acclaim for his outstanding leadership of the country’s medical response to the COVID-19 pandemic. (PR)
