‘To Sir With Love’ BCC’s Tribute to Sir Lloyd

The Barbados Community College (BCC) paid a moving homage to its founder and the most highly regarded instructors who have made significant contributions to the educational institution.
The tertiary institution honored the late Sir Lloyd Erskine Sandiford on Friday with a small ceremony titled “To Sir with love.” Friends and former and present campus residents gathered to honor Sir Lloyd for his exceptional contribution and unwavering commitment to BCC.

“Let us never forget the architect of BCC’s existence”, Dr. Allyson Leacock said in one of her first speeches as the new chairperson of the board of management at BCC.
Dr. Leacock stated that in her opinion, more needs to be done to honor the late prime minister’s contributions.

“We honour his authentic prospect, as he envisioned a society that promotes the integration of drama, dance, music and art, that is also the fabric of daily living. It is hoped that while his wish was for the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre to become the home of a national youth orchestra, that perhaps it is time again for us to continue to work towards a national performing arts company.

“One way I think that we can salute and honour the legacy of Sir Lloyd, is to commit to becoming a green campus, so that the environment at BCC and the Jean & Norma Holder Hospitality Institute, is as he said in his ode to the environment, ‘kind and benign’. Another way is to elevate the literary arts to honour his skills as an author.”

After the various tributes were made, Garth Sandiford, son of the late PM, thank everyone for their various words of support and comfort during this testing period, and said his father lived a long and fruitful life in love for his country.

“The last thing he said to me was ‘there is no greater honour than to be able to serve your country’. On behalf of my family and I, I just want to say thank you.”
