T&T Parliament prepares debate to extend the State of Emergency

The parliament in Trinidad and Tobago is expected to debate a three-month extension to the state of emergency now in effect across the country.

The SoE was declared on December 30 and is in effect for 15 days in the first instance.

In an order paper dated January 6, prime minister, Dr. Keith Rowley, asked the House to approve the extension.

In accordance with Section 10 of the Constitution, the House can extend the SoE by a period of three months with a simple majority vote.

Any extension beyond that requires a three-fifths majority vote in the House and senate.

The debate is set for next week Monday, January 13.
