‘Two sessions’ a window for world to observe China

The annual “two sessions” is an important window for the world to observe China, said an editorial published by the People’s Daily overseas edition on Sunday.

The “two sessions” refers to the annual sessions of China’s National People’s Congress (NPC), China’s top legislature, and the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), the country’s national political advisory body.

Over the years, China has continued to strengthen its foundation of democracy, the article said.

Among the deputies to the 14th NPC this year, 497 are workers and farmers, accounting for 16.69 percent of the total, while 60.8 percent of the members of the 14th CPPCC National Committee are not members of the Communist Party of China (CPC).

NPC deputies and CPPCC members from all walks of life and from different parties or without party affiliation will bring first-hand information and various issues from their regions, fields and industries to the sessions for discussion and provide important references for policymaking, the article said.

The editorial said that there are more than 200,000 homes and liaison offices of NPC deputies, where the deputies usually organize extensive inspections and visits to solve the most pressing difficulties and problems that are of great concern to the people.

The CPPCC National Committee has received more than 29,000 proposals and compiled more than 9,000 issues from public opinions, many of which became the Party’s and the government’s policies.

Today, democracy is a part of Chinese people’s daily life. It changed from a concept to an institution or mechanism rooted in China, covering all aspects of national governance, and can be seen in both economic and social development, the article said.

“Chinese people have truly become the masters of their country, society and their own destiny.” (PR)
