WI Captain Hayley Matthews No. 1 T20 all rounder

Led by their captain Hayley Matthews the West Indies women managed to level the T20 series against Australia.

Matthews has been in outstanding form first falling short of a century by one run in the first match as she ended on 99 runs and then going on to strike a career best 132 runs off a remarkable 64 balls which included 20 fours and five sixes.

It was her second century in this format the highest score by a West Indian woman in T20Is, to set up a momentous West Indies win in Australia to tie the series at 1-1 as the West Indies pulled off the highest-ever run chase victory 213 in women’s T20I.

Matthews impressive performance with the ball has also helped her to stay on top of the T20 alrounder rankings, while also moving to 7th in the batting rankings and 5th in the bowling rankings. She is the highest ranked West Indian player across the three rankings in the T20I.

The reigning ICC Women’s T20 World Cup Champions put on an imposing total of 212/6 as a mammoth 425 runs was scored in the game. Matthews now holds the highest individual score for the West Indies women in T20I, replacing Deandra Dottin’s undefeated 112 against South Africa in the 2010 World Cup. Matthews is 6th on the all time list for individual scores. For her efforts she also collected her 7th consecutive player of the match award.

She is the second person to complete a century with the bat and take three wickets with the ball and has also shared in a highest partnership for any wicket for the West Indies women’s T20I. This was a 174 run second wicket partnership with Stafanie Taylor.

The third and final T20I against Australia to decide the series is scheduled for today Thursday October 5th.
