Zane Maloney wins at Spa

Barbadian Zane Maloney captured his first victory in the FIA Formula 3 Championship at the iconic Spa-Francorchamps circuit in Belgium on Sunday (August 28). It was an impressive come back as less than 24 hours before he had rolled into retirement following heavy contact in the Sprint Race.

Maloney who is 18-years-old led the Feature Race for his team Trident Motorsport’s early in the race as he had qualified second for the race.

However he had to give back the first place as the stewards felt he had gained an unfair advantage after he had left the track while attempting the overtake for the lead on the opening lap.

Maloney had to battle his way from third and when he turned in a fastest lap he also moved into second place. A safety car on lap seven saw the Bajan driver waiting till lap 11 before he could regain the lead and go on for the victory ahead of the F1 race slated to be held after that race.

The Belgium circuit is just over 7.0 kilometres, and it was on the reverse grid sprint on Saturday that Maloney who was coming from 11th place on the grid for the sprint saw his race come to an end shortly after the restart on the sixth lap. His car flipping over but thanks to the Halo which has been introduced he was able to walk away with no injuries.
