Democratic Labour Party Holds Wreath Laying Ceremony in St Lucy to Mark Errol Barrow Day

Members and supporters of the Democratic Labour Party (DLP) gathered this morning at The Garden, Checker Hall in the parish of St Lucy for a wreath laying ceremony commemorating Errol Barrow Day, the national holiday observed annually on January 21 to honour the birth and legacy of the late Errol Walton Barrow — Barbados’ first Prime Minister, national hero and founder of the DLP.

The event, marked by solemn tributes and reflections on Barrow’s contributions to national development, saw DLP candidate for St Lucy, Ian Griffith, place a wreath as part of the ceremony. In his address, Griffith emphasised the importance of community in nation-building and acknowledged the everyday efforts of workers and local institutions in strengthening Barbadian society.

Griffith, speaking to a gathering that included residents, party members, and clergy, highlighted the value of faith-based organisations, education and grassroots engagement — all themes he said were central to Barrow’s vision for Barbados.

Ralph Thorne, Leader of the Democratic Labour Party

Leader of the Opposition Ralph Thorne also addressed attendees, underscoring the need to reinvigorate traditional pillars of community life such as the church, school and home. Thorne said the DLP, if elected, would prioritise strengthening these institutions while honouring Barrow’s enduring legacy as “the father of this country.”

Errol Barrow Day, a statutory public holiday, commemorates the birth of the Right Excellent Errol Walton Barrow, born January 21, 1920 in St Lucy, and celebrates his role in leading Barbados to independence and championing social reforms that reshaped the life of Barbadians.
