FEMALE ATHLETE OF THE YEAR IS ODWIN

 Emily Odwin is the Barbados Olympic Association (BOA) Senior Female Athlete of the Year; the 21-year-old golfer won the award at the annual BOA ceremony at the BOA 70th awards ceremony at the Wyndham Sam Lord’s Castle on Saturday night. 

Odwin earned 11 top ten finishes in tournaments this year, including placing second in the Women’s Amateur Latin America championship after a dramatic play-off with Colombia’s Maria Jose Marin at the Riviera Maya in Quintana Roo, Mexico last month.  

In April, Odwin, a former student of Queen’s College created history when she became the first Barbadian to qualify for the US Open. 

“Overall, it was a pretty good year. I did a lot of growing and a lot of learning. With this being   my busiest year yet, the key thing was to make sure I balanced everything and that I give myself enough time to rest and recover, which gave myself the best chance to compete. I realised this year was going to be a good one for me when I qualified for the US Open in April”, Odwin said.

“I love golf, it’s fun for me and it is an absolute dream to represent Barbados. It means the world to me to fly the flag in places where it was not flown before. It just means the world”, she added, 

National footballer Nial Reid-Stephen who plays professional football in the Major Soccer League (MSL) for the Georgia basedlevel One club Tormenta FC is the Senior Male Athlete of the Year.            

CARIFTA silver medalist in the 100m hurdles won the Junior Female Athlete of the Year award, and outstanding surfer Chelsea Tuach  captured the President’s Award. 

Weymouth Wales Barbados’ most decorated club were named Team of the Year, The Carrington Village based club had an outstanding season the year, winning the Premier title, the Champions Club and the Prime Minister’s Cup.
