Nisha Craigwell was elected president of the Barbados Netball Association (BNA) after defeating Vice President Mona Alleyne by 43 votes to 20 at the annual general meeting (AGM) at the Wildey Gymnasium on Wednesday night.
Craigwell held the top position in the BNA for 10 years until she was defeated by Dr Carmeta Doughlin in December 2022. In August, the BNA was hit by controversy when three members of the national selection committee Maureen Bourne, Inez Taylor and Lydia Bishop resigned leaving Clifford Roach as the only remaining member of the selection panel.
Last month Doughlin in a letter to the members of the BNA indicated that she was vacating the post of president on December 10th.
“As president of the Barbados Netball Association, I have worked hard and tirelessly and given my all in a full-time capacity over the last three years. There were many times I had to fill in for persons who were either sick or unavailable to fulfil their duties. As a board, we also took on a lot of activities which were very time consuming. I have therefore decided that I will be vacating the post of president”, Doughlin said.
According to Craigwell, her primary task is to create a new path for the sport and ensure that the 2027 domestic season captured the attention of netball fans.
“My objective first and foremost is to ensure that netball gets the reset that its desire – we are currently ranked 19th in the world which is a couple places down from what we are accustomed to. We are aiming to get back into the top ten rankings internationally. On the local scene, it is the intention of the new board to make sure that we have a season that is attractive to our supporters”, the new president said.
Alleyne was re-elected vice president, the other members of the executive are Alica Jemmott, secretary, Alica Gibson, assistant secretary, Vanessa Bobb, treasurer; and the directors are Carlos Lovell and Lisa Mottley.
