Japanese Flutist Enchants Audience at St. Patrick’s Cathedral
by Christopher Williams
A taste of Japanese musical tradition filled the St. Patrick Roman Catholic Cathedral on Saturday afternoon as master flutist Yosuke Irie captivated patrons with a program blending classical and contemporary pieces.
Mr. Irie, a renowned performer, plays the shakuhachi, a bamboo flute that dates to the 8th century and is revered for its rich, meditative sound. His visit to Barbados was facilitated by the Embassy of Japan, which partnered with the Catholic Diocese of Bridgetown to present the cultural showcase—an initiative aimed at strengthening ties between the two nations through music.
Throughout the performance, Mr. Irie engaged warmly with the audience, even inviting several attendees to step forward and attempt playing the traditional instrument. Many accepted the challenge, delighting fellow patrons as they explored the unique tones of the shakuhachi. The interactive moment drew laughter, applause, and a sense of shared cultural discovery.
In attendance were Bishop Neil Scantlebury, head of the Catholic Diocese, and His Excellency Miyasaka Yusuke, Ambassador of Japan. Both expressed their pleasure at the opportunity to foster cultural exchange and deepen mutual appreciation between Barbadian and Japanese communities.
The event left many inspired, and perhaps, as some suggested, Barbados may soon have a few new students eager to master the ancient flute.
