Students Encouraged To Be Model Citizens
Pupils of St. Mary’s Primary School and Wesley Hall Primary School (who are currently being accommodated at St. Mary’s Primary School) were encouraged to be model citizens and commit to engaging in activities that support their communities.
President of Barbados, His Excellency, Lieutenant Colonel The Most Honourable Jeffrey Bostic, gave this recommendation during a visit to his alma mater, St. Mary’s Primary School, Bridgetown, on Monday.
This was His Excellency’s first visit as part of an initiative to engage primary and secondary students across the island.
Crediting Sir Elliott Belgrave, former Governor General of Barbados (June 1, 2012, to June 30, 2017), with initiating the programme during his tenure, Mr. Bostic noted that it will inspire students to set high standards for themselves and pursue personal goals, regardless of the challenges they may encounter.
He remarked: “You too could be the President, or a top-class footballer, cricketer, netballer, a top-class barber…whatever your desire is, whatever it is that you want to achieve, you can be that person, just as I am at this point in time.”
Mr. Bostic also encouraged the students to join organisations such as the Girl Guides’ Association of Barbados and the Barbados Boy Scouts Association, as they could help them strengthen their self-esteem and self-discipline. He also encouraged the teaching staff to volunteer and support the students’ involvement in the Associations.
During the visit, students were provided with an opportunity to ask questions. Students and staff welcomed His Excellency with vibrant performances featuring song, dance, spoken word, and drama.
The acting Principal of St. Mary’s Primary School, Susan Rolston, with assistance from the President, unveiled a portrait of His Excellency on an external wall of the school. (PR/GIS)
