Meet the candidates shaping Barbados’ future—join the conversation, ask the hard questions, and make an informed choice ahead of Election Day, February 11.
Today we begin with the leaders of three parties, the Barbados Labour Party, Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley, Leader of the Opposition, Ralph Thorne and leader of the Friends of Democracy Karina Goodridge.
ABOUT THE CANDIDATES
Mia Amor Mottley is an attorney-at law and states woman. Educated at Queens College in Barbados and the London School of Economics and Political Science she was called to the bar in Barbados and entered pubic life at a young age. First elected to he House of Assembly in 1994 as Member of Parliament for the constituency of St Michael North East.
In her parliamentary career she has held several senior ministerial portfolios including Attorney General, Minister of Economic Affairs and Development, Minister of Education, Minister of Home Affairs and deputy Prime Minister. In 2018 she made history as the first female Prime Minister.
RALPH THORNE
Ralph Thorne is an attorney-at-law and seasoned Parliamentarian who is serving as Leader of the Opposition and Political Leader of the Democratic Labour Party. He is a King’s Counsel with decades of legal practice. He has served as Chairman of the Commission Local Government Reform and formerly was the representative of Christ Church South. This election Mr. Thorne seeks to represent the constituency of St. John.
KARINA GOODRIDGE
Karina Goodridge is President of Friends of Democracy and a practicing Attorney-at-Law. She is the owner of East Wind Legal with experience across civil law, litigation, estates, banking, and insurance. She is a frequent media commentator on youth development and national issues. This election Ms. Goodridge seeks to represent the constituency of St. Philip West.
