ODWIN PLACES SECOND IN LPGA
By David Harris
Barbadian golfer Emily Odwin placed second in the Women’s Amateur Latin America Championship after a play-off with Maria Jose Marin of Colombia at the PGA Riviera Maya in Tulum, Mexico on Sunday.
The Colombian had a two-stroke lead headed into the final two holes but bogeyed twice to finish tied for first with Odwin, the Barbadian and Marin three extra holes to determine the winner. Marin parred the Par-4 No.10 and Odwin double bogeyed.
A field of 60 competitors took part in the fifth edition of the Championship. The field was considered the strongest in the tournament’s history.
Last week; Odwin who placed 29th at this year’s US Open opted out of the final stage of the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) Q-School, the high-stakes qualifying tournament that serves as a pathway for professional golfers to earn membership of the LPGA or Epson Tour.
LPGA regulations require all competitors in the final stage to either turn professional or defer their Epson status until after the National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA) Championship in May next year.
Odwin has decided to retain her amateur status and compete her tertiary education at Southern Methodist University in the United States. The talented 21-year-old golfer plans to turn professional after graduation next year.
