Members of the University of the West Indies’ Model United Nations (UN) Club paid a special visit to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, last Friday.
The students, accompanied by Lecturer in Political Science and Faculty Advisor for the Club, Dr. Sandra Ochieng-Springer, were formally introduced to Senior Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Senator Christopher Sinckler, Director General, Donna Forde, and other members of the Ministry’s management team.
Senator Sinckler welcomed the students and explained how his Ministry represents Barbados’ foreign policy interests domestically and internationally.
During the brief interaction, the Minister and his team shared advice on career choices in the diplomatic service, and other areas of endeavour. They wished the students success in their studies, upcoming examinations and future career prospects.
Senior Foreign Service Officer in the Division of Protocol, Michelle Carter, made a presentation to the students on the topic: The Art and Process of Negotiation: A Diplomat’s Perspective.
Ms. Carter’s presentation gave an overview of the Ministry, the work of the various departments and an in-depth look at the negotiation process.
For a career in the diplomatic service, she also suggested that the students acquire additional skills such as enhancing their public speaking, communications and video editing skills, along with obtaining their first degree. (PR/GIS)
