Barbadian students with a thirst for science and technology are being encouraged to participate in two upcoming activities being held by the Caribbean Science Foundation (CSF) – the Barbados Junior Robotics Camp (BJRC) and the Barbados Robotics Innovation Challenge (BRIC).
The Barbados Junior Robotics Camp introduces students between ages of 10 and 18 to robotics and Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, through engaging, hands-on learning experiences. The BJRC is conducted by the CSF in partnership with the University of the West Indies (UWI), Cave Hill Campus.
The BJRC is offered at four levels which will run parallel – Levels I and II for beginners; Level III for Creators; and Level IV for Innovators. The 2026 camp will take place from Monday, July 13 to Friday, August 14. It will operate weekdays, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. (excluding public holidays), at the UWI Cave Hill Campus.
A key highlight will be the students’ public showcase of their robotic projects on Thursday, August 13. For more information on the BJRC, visit: https://caribbeanscience.org/barbados-junior-robotics-camp/.
The Barbados Robotics Innovation Challenge is a multi-phase competition, engaging secondary and tertiary students as well as robotics club members, in hands-on engineering, problem-solving projects that address challenges relevant to Barbados. The 2026 challenge is for participants to build a robot that can climb a coconut tree and reap coconuts.
The competition is structured in three phases:
- Phase I: Engineering Design Proposal Development
- Phase II: Prototype Development
- Phase III: Full System Implementation
Phase I is currently underway, and funding is available for up to six teams with the best engineering designs to advance to Phase II and build their prototypes. The submission deadline for Phase I (Robotic Design Proposals) is Sunday, August 16, 2026. (PR/GIS)
