Heritage Month Continues With Antique Market On Sunday June 21

Heritage Month 2026 continues this Sunday, June 21 with one of its most anticipated events, as the popular Antiques Market returns to Golden Square Freedom Park on Father’s Day, from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

A favourite on the Heritage Month calendar, the Antiques Market will offer the public an opportunity to explore and purchase authentic Barbadian antiques.

Heritage Month Coordinator, Office of Pan African Affairs and Heritage, Prime Minister’s Office, Dr. Sheron Johnson, noted, “We will have from furniture to books, records, glassware and a variety of other heritage items for persons to view and purchase. At the same time, they will get to learn more about the island’s material culture and traditions.

“Patrons will also be able to enjoy traditional caning demonstrations and to engage with collectors, vendors and heritage enthusiasts in a family-friendly setting, which is a great outing for Father’s Day.”

Dr. Johnson further highlighted that there were several activities still to come during Heritage Month 2026, a month-long celebration coordinated by the Office of Pan African Affairs and Heritage in collaboration with stakeholders of the Barbados World Heritage Committee.

“Thursday, June 25 is the day we celebrate the inscription of Historic Bridgetown and its Garrison as a UNESCO World Heritage Property, and we have a special event. We will be hosting the annual Heritage Month Youth Webinar which will bring together young heritage practitioners, University of the West Indies students, trainee conservators and youth representatives from Kenya.

“Together they will explore the role of young people and digital technology in heritage preservation and promotion. The theme for the discussion is Why Heritage Matters: A Youth Perspective. Then on Sunday, June 28, the BTMI and the Barbados Archives Department will present Modern-Day Griots: Voices of Today, at the Daphne Joseph-Hackett Theatre, Queen’s Park. This event will showcase stories of Barbados shared by local personalities while celebrating the island’s rich oral traditions and cultural identity.

“The Barbados National Trust will also continue to host free Open Days at its various significant sites like Gun Hill as part of the month of activities in our continued national efforts to celebrate and safeguard Barbados’ heritage for future generations. We encourage all Barbadians to come out and participate in these important educational, historic and cultural activities over the next two weeks,” Dr. Johnson added.

Heritage Month 2026 closes on Tuesday, June 30 with Atlantic Stories: A Digital Archive Showcase hosted by the Reclaiming Our Atlantic Destiny (ROAD) Programme at the Barbados Archives Department. This showcase will feature immersive digital applications and exhibitions highlighting Barbados’ historical records and the ongoing work to digitise and preserve the nation’s documentary heritage.
