Barbados And Liberia Sign Historic Visa Waiver Agreement

Ambassador of Barbados to the Republic of Liberia, Juliette Bynoe-Sutherland, has signed a historic Visa Waiver Agreement on behalf of the Government of Barbados, with the Republic of Liberia.

This signing marks a significant step in strengthening bilateral relations and advancing practical cooperation.

On this occasion, a Memorandum of Understanding on Political Consultation was also signed, underscoring the dedication of both nations to sustained dialogue and strategic collaboration.

The Agreement was jointly signed with Liberia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sara Beysolow Nyanti, who welcomed the initiative as a “forward-looking” measure to expand opportunities for both nations. The ceremony was held on March 18, and included senior officials from both governments.

The signing of the Agreement represents the elimination of visa requirements for Barbadian nationals travelling to Liberia for business or leisure.

This is expected to enable seamless travel, unlock opportunities in sectors like agriculture and tourism, and foster cultural exchanges rooted in shared history. It also paves the way for academic collaboration, institutional partnerships, and professional exchanges.

Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Senator Christopher Sinckler, who guided these initiatives through Cabinet, emphasised that deepening ties across Africa is central to Barbados’ evolving foreign policy. He noted that enhanced engagement with partners such as Liberia reflects Barbados’ commitment to resilient South–South partnerships, expanded trade and investment, and positioning within emerging global networks.

High Commissioner Bynoe-Sutherland highlighted the significance of the moment, stating that the Visa Waiver Agreement, alongside a Political Consultation Framework signed concurrently, signals a deliberate recalibration of Barbados’ engagement with Africa and the wider Global South.

“We remain inspired by our forefathers who journeyed 160 years ago from Barbados to found and develop Liberia. In this modern era, we return not only in recognition of that shared history, but to create practical and meaningful opportunities for our people,” she remarked. The Government of Barbados views this Agreement as a critical step in building a modern, results-oriented partnership with Liberia, grounded in shared heritage, mutual respect, and a clear, progressive vision for sustainable development and global connectivity.
