Ministry Of Energy Presents Megan Allan With Award
Sixth form student at The St. Michael School, Megan Allan, has been rewarded by the Ministry of Energy and Business for her outstanding academic achievement.
Megan earned Grade 1 in the Green Engineering Unit 1 of the Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination, and she is the only student in the region to have secured this impressive grade.
In congratulating her for the exceptional performance, Minister of Energy and Business, Senator Lisa Cummins, said the Ministry wanted to present the trophy and $500 gift certificate at the school’s recent speech day.
Senator Cummins continued: “Megan Allan has achieved the highest score and a Grade 1 and is the only student to have done that in the entire Caribbean for Green Engineering….
“We want to make sure that this is not just the first and the only prize, but it is the inaugural prize…. We will offer, wherever they come from in Barbados, a prize to the student who achieves the highest score and achieves this level of excellence in Green Engineering going forward.”
The Minister noted that some years ago, Barbados and other Caribbean countries started a conversation about the skills needed for energy transition.
She told the students that there were certain subjects that would be even more critical to the island’s development and listed them as Chemistry, Physics, Environmental Science and Green Engineering.
“Green Engineering and all of the subjects that I mentioned are really going to be important…as we move into the future careers that help to facilitate the energy transition. All of you have a role to play…,” Senator Cummins stated.
Megan said she was “pleasantly surprised” and “happy” when she found out she had secured Grade 1.“I am excited but hoping I can pull it off again this year…. Not all of the topics that I thought were going to be in the paper were there. So, I was actually pleasantly surprised. It was a good paper.”
When asked about her choice of subjects, she continued: “Green Engineering goes well with my other two subjects – Biology and Environmental Science…. I want to pursue marine biology and conservation, and I feel that (green engineering) would really help in my area of study. “
Megan has already applied to a few tertiary institutions, including McGill University. (PR/GIS)
