Ninety-five students across Barbados have strengthened their readiness for the Barbados Secondary Schools’ Entrance Examination (BSSEE) through targeted academic support, delivered under the One Family Programme of the Ministry of People Empowerment and Elder Affairs.
This initiative forms part of the Ministry’s ongoing commitment to improving educational outcomes and supporting vulnerable families nationwide. The programme currently assists 136 students preparing to sit this year’s examination, including the 95 who participated in focused exam preparation sessions.
Since January 2026, participating students have attended twice-weekly evening lessons, facilitated by retired principal George Francis, whose dedication has played a key role in equipping students with the knowledge and skills required for success.
A major highlight of the initiative was the administration of a Mock BSSEE, on Tuesday, April 8, from 9:00 a.m. to noon, at the Warrens Office Complex. The exercise replicated formal testing conditions, allowing students to become familiar with the structure and timing of the examination, while enabling facilitators to assess readiness and identify areas needing additional support.
Social Development Project Manager, Nicole Daniel, noted: “Today’s exercise allowed students to experience the structure and expectations of the 11+ exam in a supportive setting. It also gives us valuable insight into areas where additional support may be needed as we continue to guide them toward success.”
Project Officer, Kimelle Harper, emphasised the importance of early and consistent intervention, stating: “Exposure to structured academic support and examination environments plays a critical role in building students’ confidence and improving performance outcomes.”
Minister of People Empowerment and Elder Affairs, Adrian Forde, said the effort is about more than academic preparation, noting that it is about giving children the confidence, support, and opportunity to realise their full potential.
Mr. Forde continued: “We are ensuring that every child in the One Family Programme feels supported, capable, and ready to meet this important milestone with courage and determination.”
Following the mock examination, students will benefit from additional activities, including a pre-examination “Power Up” session and a “Transition to Secondary School” workshop. These initiatives are designed to further equip students with the tools, mindset, and support needed as they approach the examination and transition into the next phase of their academic journey.
The Ministry extends sincere appreciation to Happy Group Inc. for its generous sponsorship, which contributed significantly to the successful execution of the initiative. The Ministry also welcomes additional partners and stakeholders to support the continued delivery and expansion of this impactful programme. (PR/GIS)
