Government Investing In Sports Across The Board

Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley believes that there is great interest in primary school athletics, as evidenced by the energy from the spectators in the stands and the rivalry among the students competing for bragging rights and school glory.

Ms. Mottley, who along with Minister of Education Transformation, Chad Blackman, watched some of the action at this year’s National Primary Schools’ Athletics Championships (NAPSAC) at the Usain Bolt Sport Complex yesterday, noted the importance of government’s investment in sports across the board.

Pointing to the huge interest in primary school sports, the Prime Minister contended that the athleticism displayed by the young athletes was worthy of “providing the best opportunities for them to develop themselves”.

“And that is why government has been investing so much money in sports across the board.  Most people have just recently seen what we’ve done at the Gymnasium with respect to the glass floor…You have the new netball stadium that that will also accommodate basketball and volleyball when it is done.

“We have a new national stadium being built; we are also investing in two new tracks – one in St. Philip and one in St. James in Holetown, and we have taken the decision that we will build two Olympic-sized swimming pools at those two locations in St. Philip and St. James.  We already have a new track at Wildey and these are the things that we have been working towards to give Barbadians opportunities,” Ms. Mottley stated.              

Impressed with the athleticism on the track, Ms. Mottley thanked the NAPSAC Committee and others involved in executing the event. The Prime Minister also praised corporate Barbados for stepping up, and encouraged other entities to come on board. (PR/GIS)
