A GIANT HAS FALLEN

ADVO Magazine joins the nation and the cricketing world in mourning the passing of one of Barbados’ greatest sons — The Right Excellent Sir Garfield “Garry” Sobers, who died this morning at his home in St Michael at the age of 89, just eleven days before his 90th birthday.

His genius knew no limits. A masterful left-handed batsman, a bowler of three different styles, and a brilliant fielder, he played 93 Tests, amassing 8,032 runs and taking 235 wickets. In 1968, he etched his name into folklore forever as the first man to strike six sixes in a single over of first-class cricket.

Knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 1975 and later named among the ten National Heroes of Barbados, Sir Garry carried the pride of this island onto every field he graced. He was, and remains, the very embodiment of Bajan excellence.

Rest well, Sir Garry.
