The Commissioner of Police, Sonia Boyce, has presented letters of appointment to the recently appointed Deputy Commissioner and Assistant Commissioners of The Barbados Police Service, marking another important step in the strengthening of the organisation’s senior command team.
The presentation followed the announcement of the appointments of Barry Hunte and Adrian Broomes as Deputy Commissioners of Police, effective July 3, 2026, and Stephen Herbert, David Welch and John Boyce as Assistant Commissioners of Police.
In brief remarks to senior officers assembled for the presentation at Police Headquarters, Commissioner Boyce described the occasion as “a joyous morning,” noting that the Service had gathered not only to celebrate her own elevation to Commissioner of Police, but also the official appointments of two Deputy Commissioners and three Assistant Commissioners.
She observed that some of the officers had acted in their respective posts for some time and said it was important that they had now been formally appointed. Commissioner Boyce also noted that Deputy Commissioner Adrian Broomes was absent from the ceremony as he was overseas participating in a police executive training course.
Commissioner Boyce extended congratulations to Deputy Commissioner Barry Hunte and Assistant Commissioners John Boyce, Stephen Herbert and David Welch, thanking them for their service and continued commitment to the organisation.
“The Barbados Police Service is not a one woman or one man show,” Commissioner Boyce said, emphasising that the senior command team must move forward as a united group, “hand in hand,” to take the organisation forward.
She said the objective of the leadership team is to continue building The Barbados Police Service into an organisation that is not only among the best in the region, but among the best in the world.
The appointments strengthen the senior command team at an important time for the organisation, as The Barbados Police Service continues to advance its operational priorities, enhance public confidence, support professional development, and improve organisational effectiveness.
Deputy Commissioner Hunte has served in senior leadership roles within the Service, including responsibility for special operations and management services, and has been recognised for his focus on leadership, standards, performance, change management and the effective execution of the Service’s policing plan. Deputy Commissioner Broomes has had key roles in disaster response and coordination and continues to pursue executive leadership training.
Assistant Commissioner Herbert is responsible for Human Resources and Administration, with duties focused on workforce development, strategic training and inter-agency collaboration. Assistant Commissioner Welch has responsibility for change management and technology services, while Assistant Commissioner John Boyce has served at senior command level, including responsibility for crime.
The Barbados Police Service congratulates the newly appointed Deputy Commissioners and Assistant Commissioners and wishes them every success as they assume their new responsibilities in service to Barbados. (PR/GIS)
