Barbados Welcomes Inaugural Flight Of Sunrise Airways

The inclusion of Barbados as part of the network expansion of Sunrise Airways is a vital step in strengthening inter-regional travel connectivity.

Minister of Tourism and International Transport, Ian Gooding-Edghill, made this assertion as Barbados welcomed Sunrise Airways to its shores Wednesday. He described the inaugural flight from Antigua to Barbados as significant.

“It’s about building opportunities and tangible benefits for both destinations…. Today’s launch, therefore, is more than just the arrival of a new flight. It is a vital step forward in deepening the bonds of all our Caribbean family together,” Mr. Gooding-Edghill shared.

He offered congratulations to the management and owners of Sunrise Airways, describing the inaugural flight as a “significant business decision” that will help to reinforce economic opportunities for both islands and the airline, increase travel and stimulate further demand for this part of the region.

 “The Caribbean remains Barbados’ third largest source market. Last year, we had over 102,000 visitors from the Caribbean region, and with increased intra-regional traffic, we are confident that our numbers will continue to grow.

“Strong, reliable airlift is the foundation of a successful tourism industry, fuelling visitors, supporting businesses, enabling investment, and keeping families and friends across the Caribbean connected,” Minister Goding-Edghill stated.

Minister of State in the Ministry of Tourism, Antigua and Barbuda, Michael Freeland, described the launch as more than just the addition of a new service, but as a celebration of Caribbean unity, regional cooperation, and opportunities that arise when it is easier for Caribbean people to connect.

“Tourism remains the lifeblood of many Caribbean economies. While our beaches, heritage, cuisine, festivals, and warm hospitality continue to attract visitors from around the world, we also recognise that the strength of our tourism industry depends on one critical factor – connectivity.”

Mr. Freeland said Antigua and Barbuda and Barbados have a “special” relationship because of shared common histories, common values, and a common vision for regional progress.

“Our people have long travelled between our islands for business, education, leisure, sports, and family. Today’s inaugural flight strengthens those bonds and makes those connections even easier,” he noted.

Chief Executive Officer, Sunrise Airways, Gary Stone, shared that Barbados has become the 20th destination of the airline, and hails the new route as a reflection of the confidence in the potential of the Barbadian market and the unwavering commitment to improve general connectivity.

“We call it One Caribbean…that’s our motto, and that’s what we live for – One Caribbean…. Barbados looms large as one of the Caribbean’s premier destinations. This direct service from Antigua and Barbuda will enhance regional connectivity, expand option for travellers, and give our passengers the opportunity to experience the warm hospitality and quality service that defines Sunrise Airways,” Mr. Stone expressed.

The Sunrise CEO added that the inauguration is a signal that the airline is strengthening commercial tourism cultural ties while promoting economic growth and deeper integration as a Caribbean community.
