Heritage Month 2026 Officially Launched at Cricket Legends

The Division of Culture on Saturday May 30th officially launched the observance of Heritage Month. The event, held on the eve of the month-long celebrations which begin on June 1, will showcase the diversity of Barbadian culture through music, dance, storytelling, and tributes to individuals who have made significant contributions to preserving the nation’s history and traditions.

A highlight of the ceremony was the presentation of awards to several distinguished Barbadians by the Minister in the Prime Minister’s office responsibility for Pan African Affairs, Trevor Prescod. Awards were presented to five individuals recognizing them for their years of service and commitment to ensuring that future generations remain connected to the island’s rich history and traditions. Awardees were Diplomat, Michael King, Ronnie Carrington photo journalist and heritage tour operator, conservationist Paul Altman, policy architect Celia Toppin and in abstentia, Sabir Nakudah.

Addressing the gathering, the Minister emphasized the importance of Heritage Month as an opportunity for Barbadians to reflect on the struggles, achievements, and resilience of those who helped shape the nation.

Dr. Sheron Johnson shared a list of activities for Heritage Month 2026 featuring the Bridgetown Literacy Bus Tour, a youth webinar, and several other activities. The events are expected to focus on historical awareness, cultural expression, and community engagement, reinforcing the significance of preserving the nation’s heritage.

As Barbados embarks on another Heritage Month celebration, the launch served as a reminder of the enduring importance of honoring the island’s past while embracing the opportunities of the future. The recognition of outstanding contributors and the enthusiastic participation of the public underscored the collective commitment to safeguarding Barbados’ cultural legacy for generations to come.
