Mural At Eagle Hall Post Office Being Remastered

The vibrant history and cultural legacy of Eagle Hall are set to come alive once again as mural artist, Omowale Stewart, begins the restoration and repainting of the iconic Eagle Hall Heritage Mural, at the Eagle Hall Post Office in St. Michael.

Commissioned by the Ministry of Legal Affairs and Criminal Justice, with the support of the National Cultural Foundation, the community project seeks to preserve a landmark that reflects the people, stories, achievements, and heritage that have shaped the Eagle Hall community over the years.

Mr. Stewart, the original artist of the first mural will, over the next four months, carefully restore and enhance the mural, ensuring that future generations can continue to appreciate this visual representation of the community’s rich identity and enduring spirit.

It will feature 54 figures and will be separated into two sections which represent the old, traditional Eagle Hall area. Some of the elements will include Mapp’s Shop; a policeman and postman; children reading; a Spiritual Baptist member; the first FIFA referee, Wayne Norville; figures representing sports such as football, boxing, road tennis and netball, as well as The Liberty Institution which evolved into Kadooment.

It also depicts national hero Sarah Ann Gill, the old Roxy building, traditional methods of transportation and Bajan figures like the nut seller and vendor.

The project forms part of a broader commitment to community engagement, cultural preservation, and the celebration of Barbados’ unique heritage through public art. The remastering process is being documented through the Design and Implementation Unit. (PR/GIS)
