COHOBBLOPOT RETURNS

One of Crop Over’s most iconic celebrations, Cohobblopot, is set to return after more than a decade, with government officials promising a refreshed, modernised experience aimed at engaging a new generation of festivalgoers.

The announcement was made on Saturday by Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office with responsibility for Youth and Culture, Senator Shane Archer, during the official Crop Over media launch at the Hilton Barbados Resort.

Archer said the decision to revive the event followed sustained public demand and will see Cohobblopot staged “in a major way,” supported by private sector partnerships as part of a broader effort to reinvigorate Barbados’ premier cultural festival.

However, he was clear that the move is not simply about revisiting the past for sentimental reasons, but about reimagining it for today’s cultural landscape. “Let me say this clearly, this is not about bringing back something old for the sake of sentiment,” Archer said, addressing potential criticism of the revival of legacy events. “Being youthful is not about rejecting the past… youth knows how to recognize value, refresh it, and make it matter again.”

He further framed the return of Cohobblopot as part of a wider philosophy of cultural renewal rather than replication. “There’s nothing new under the sun, but there’s always room for renewal. Real freshness is knowing what was good and having the vision and capability to present it in a way that belongs fully to the cultural environment we live in now,” he added.
The reintroduction of Cohobblopot is expected to form a key highlight of this year’s Crop Over season, signalling both continuity and evolution within Barbados’ cultural calendar.
