Government Committed To Preserving Culture & Heritage

Culture and heritage are powerful tools for education, national development, unity and transformation.

Deputy Permanent Secretary in the Prime Minister’s Office with responsibility for Culture, Michelle Maynard, recently reaffirmed Government’s commitment to the preservation of this country’s culture and heritage, at the Africa Day Cultural Extravaganza, hosted by the National Library Service (NLS), at Solidarity House, Harmony Hall, St. Michael.

“We remain committed to preserving our heritage, strengthening our cultural identity, and ensuring that generations understand the importance of their history and ancestry through initiatives such as Africa Day and the season of emancipation, educational partnerships, and cultural exchanges.

“We continue to create opportunities for young people to learn, to develop, to connect, and to get a greater appreciation of their identity – their place in this world. Our role is to build a society that is confident in its heritage, proud of its people, and respectful of diversity,” Ms. Maynard stated.

She added that Africa Day is more than a celebration but serves as a reminder. “It reminds us of where we came from, the struggles endured by our ancestors, the strength they carried, and the cultural legacy they passed on to us. The rhythm of our music, the flavour of our food, the resilience of our people, our spirituality, language, work, and traditions all carry the unique imprints of Africa.

“The story of Africa is also our story…. Many of our traditions, values, and customs can be traced back to Africa. That is why it is so important for us, especially our young people, to learn about and appreciate African heritage,” she said.

The Deputy Permanent Secretary encouraged the students to remain curious, read widely, learn their history, and celebrate their culture.

“Believe in your ability to contribute positively to Barbados, the Caribbean, and the wider world. You are the next generation of leaders, artists, educators, scientists, entrepreneurs, and cultural ambassadors. The future of our nation rests in your capable hands,” she stressed.

Director of the National Library Service, Jennifer Yarde, shared that the theme of the event, From Africa to Barbados – Proud of Our Past, Inspired for Our Future, is a reminder of the importance of understanding the past and how Barbadian history will shape who persons become in the future.

“Today gives us a wonderful opportunity.  As a vibrant, creative, and beautiful continent, Africa is rich in history, music, art, architecture, inventions, and natural beauty, and there is still so much more for us to explore…. That is why it is so important for us to continue reading, learning, and educating ourselves,” she stated.

Mrs. Yarde added that although many ancestors came from Africa to Barbados during difficult times when they were denied the opportunity to read or write, values and lessons have been passed down through generations that have shaped this island and its families despite these hardships.

“They taught us the importance of respect, hard work, kindness, discipline, faith, and caring for one another. They shared traditional remedies and natural healing practices that helped to keep families healthy and strong. They also believed in strong family values, community spirit, and looking out for their neighbours, she pointed out.”

The NLS Director told the children that education is one of the most powerful tools they have to change the world and that the library is one of the best places to begin the journey of self-development and building the future of the country.

“Our libraries offer many books, photographs on new sources that teach about Africa and the wider world. We also hold story hours, lectures, [and] engaging discussions, where everyone can learn together. Always remember that you are the future of our world, not only our business. When you learn to read, write, and think for yourself, you prepare yourselves to become leaders of tomorrow,” she indicated. (PR/GIS)
