The official launch of Barbados’ newest digital payment platform, BimPay, was met with excitement from consumers and businesses eager for a modern, locally developed payment solution. However, the rollout has been marred by technical challenges and user frustrations, raising concerns about the platform’s readiness for widespread adoption.
BimPay, designed to facilitate cashless transactions and promote financial inclusion, was introduced as a convenient way for Barbadians to send and receive money, pay bills, and make purchases using their mobile devices. The platform has been touted as a significant step forward in the island’s digital transformation efforts.
While the launch was widely anticipated, the platform encountered several early challenges, with users reporting difficulties registering accounts and completing transactions. Addressing concerns at a media briefing, Central Bank Governor Dr Kevin Greenidge acknowledged that “several teething issues were experienced along the way”, adding that most had already been resolved or would be fixed shortly. He maintained confidence in the system, noting that 99 per cent of more than 20,000 transactions processed during the first weekend were completed successfully.
