Bishop’s Call to Exercise One’s Right to Vote

Barbados once again stands at an important crossroad in our democratic journey. We are called to exercise our right to vote on Wednesday, February 11, 2026, as faithful stewards of this nation God has entrusted to us – discerning, with prayerful hearts, those who seek the welfare of our people and who will act justly, love mercy and walk humbly with our God.

Voting is not only a privilege; it is a sacred responsibility. It is an expression of our God‑given dignity, the means by which all Barbadians have the opportunity to voice their hopes, values, and vision for our nation. To abstain is to surrender that voice. I therefore encourage us to approach this responsibility with prayerful discernment as we seek God’s guidance in the decisions that will help shape the future of our country.  In choosing representatives for our constituencies and a government for our beloved Barbados, may we do so, mindful, that our participation is both a civic duty and a sacred responsibility.

I am aware that some may feel discouraged or believe their vote does not matter. Yet history teaches us that every vote counts, and Scripture reminds us that God works through the faithful actions of ordinary people. Voter apathy weakens our democracy, while participation strengthens it and affirms our shared commitment to the common good. Choosing not to vote is, in effect, allowing others to determine the future on our behalf.  Therefore, I urge all citizens to rise above indifference and to exercise this God‑given right to choose leaders who will serve with humility, integrity and genuine love for the people. Whether the outcome aligns with our personal preferences or not, the act of voting itself is an affirmation of our collective hope, a commitment to justice, peace and the flourishing of all.

As we go to the polls, may we do so with confidence and calm assurance that our democratic process will remain free, fair and transparent. May every eligible citizen be granted the full opportunity to cast their vote; and may wisdom guide our choices, fairness govern our electoral system, and peace reign throughout our nation during this important moment in our collective life.   May those eventually elected truly serve with humility, integrity, righteousness and love – placing the well-being of all people above self‑interest.   Then together, may we build a Barbados where justice rolls down like waters and righteousness like an ever‑flowing stream (Amos 5:24), where unity, compassion, and truth prevail, and where the moral vision of God’s kingdom influences our national life.

Our vote becomes an offering, an act of faith and hope for the shaping of a society where righteousness and peace flourish, and where the God‑given dignity of every human being, created in the image of God, is honoured and upheld.

Therefore, I urge you to go to the polls with faith and conviction; vote with wisdom guided by God’s Spirit; and trust that the Lord remains sovereign over the affairs of our nation.   May our actions reflect our hope, our faith and our commitment to God’s purpose for Barbados. (PR)
