Calvin Hope was elected the 13th president of the Barbados Cricket Association (BCA), at 23rd Special Meeting of members for the purpose of elections which took place on the second floor of the 3Ws Stand at Kensington Oval on Tuesday night.
Hope served as the vice-president of the BCA for eight years, during the presidency of Conde Riley who stepped down from the position. Hope, an attorney at law polled 157 votes to defeat challengers Hendy Wallace (68) former Barbados and West Indies opening batsman Philo Wallace (57) and Jeff Broomes (13). One vote was spoilt.
“I am elated but humble at this honour”, Hope said after it was announced that he had won the elections.
“There is a lot to be done and I do pledge to members that I will do my best and pull the board together in unity whenever its formed because they are still voting for the other directors”, Hope said.
Hope explained that his task as president is to reset the BCA: “The first order of business , as I said in my manifesto is that we need to do some resetting. You have to work on the strategic plan for all cricket, pull the board together and put committees in place. We want to build unity- that is the main focus of cricket”.
Attorney at law Senator Gregory Nicholls was returned as secretary with 157 votes defeating Jo-Ann Haynes who polled 125 votes. Five ballots were spoil.
Meanwhile, former West Indies all-rounder Carlos Brathwaite was elected to the BCA’s board of directors, Brathwaite polled 185 votes, Henderson Wallace was returned to the board with 142 votes and Winston Haynes was elected to the board for the first time with 119 votes.
Longstanding director Kamal Springer lost his position on the board after capturing 112 votes, and head of the Academy of Sports got 84 votes in his first attempt to be elected to the board. (PR/GIS)
