Friends of Democracy Candidate for St. Michael West Central Pushes People-First Politics

Katrina Ramsey, a  candidate for the Friends of Democracy party in the 2026 General Election, is calling for a more people-centred approach to governance, saying too many Barbadians feel unheard outside of election season.

Ramsey, a young mother from St. Michael West Central, made the case for her candidacy during a community meeting where she spoke candidly about her upbringing, her daily experiences, and the issues affecting residents in the constituency.

She told those gathered that her entry into politics was not driven by party loyalty or personal ambition, but by frustration with long-standing problems that continue to resurface every election cycle. As a parent, she said concerns about safety, opportunity, and the rising cost of living weigh heavily on many families across the island.

Ramsey highlighted several issues she says residents regularly raise with her, including poor road conditions, speeding in residential areas, inadequate sanitation, and some households still relying on pit latrines. She argued that access to proper sanitation is a matter of dignity and that such conditions should not persist in modern Barbados.

Access to basic healthcare also featured prominently in her remarks. Ramsey shared concerns about residents navigating the public health system and families struggling to afford overseas medical care, noting that healthcare should not depend on privilege or personal connections.

On youth development, Ramsey stressed the importance of practical training and employment opportunities, saying too many young people feel forced to leave Barbados in search of a better future. She expressed support for expanding technical and vocational education, mentorship, and entrepreneurship as ways to build confidence and economic stability among youth.

She also outlined ideas aimed at strengthening community bonds, including cultural and recreational activities designed to foster unity and mutual support within neighbourhoods.

Politically, Ramsey acknowledged that she previously supported the Barbados Labour Party but said repeated disappointments led her to seek an alternative. She explained that her decision to join the Friends of Democracy was rooted in a desire for honesty, accountability, and consistent engagement with constituents.

Ramsey said she is not seeking office to defend a political party, but to represent the people of St. Michael West Central, urging voters who feel frustrated or unheard to consider a different path in the upcoming election.
