New Educators Urged To Transform Barbados’ Future

Erdiston Teachers’ Training College has celebrated its 2026 Graduation Ceremony at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre, sending 119 newly trained educators into classrooms across Barbados.

Under the theme, Prepared to Teach, Equipped to Transform, Minister of Technological and Vocational Training, Sandra Husbands, delivered remarks, describing the graduates as “a very precious deposit in the future of Barbados”.

Ms. Husbands said that as one of the world’s newest republics, Barbados is entrusting this generation of teachers with helping to build and define the character, direction and success of the nation.

“A tremendous responsibility has been placed in your hands because this nation trusts you to deliver a republic that we can be proud of,” the Minister told the graduating class. “A republic that will work for every single Barbadian.”

Ms. Husbands framed the event as a pivotal moment for national development, pointing to rapid technological advancement, artificial intelligence and shifting labour markets as forces reshaping economies worldwide.

“We can no longer learn once and think that it will serve us for a lifetime. Continuous learning is going to be necessary for every single Barbadian,” she said, adding that educational transformation is central to building a globally competitive workforce.

“No reform, no policy, no investment that we make as a country in infrastructure will succeed unless it is brought to life in the classroom. And that responsibility rests squarely on your shoulders,” she told graduates.

Urging them to be “bold transformers”, Ms. Husbands called on the new teachers to act as “architects of opportunity” and “guides for possibility”, rather than simple deliverers of content. She challenged them to reject complacency, integrate technology meaningfully and cultivate creativity, resilience, adaptability and collaboration in their students.

“Do not settle for maintaining the status quo. Be bold enough to transform it,” she said. “Do not simply cover the curriculum. Bring it to life.”

Ms. Husbands highlighted the example of Barbadian medical researcher Juliette Daniels, whose work on an aggressive cancer gene has supported lifesaving treatments, as evidence of the potential that can emerge from local classrooms.

“There will be many Juliette Daniels who will pass through your hands,” she said. “Value and treasure all of them because every one of them is a potential Juliette Daniels who has written Barbados’ name on history’s page.”

Describing teaching as “a calling” and not merely a job, she reminded graduates that their impact would endure through generations.

“If Barbados is to succeed in this new global era, it will not happen by chance,” Ms. Husbands concluded. “It will happen because of teachers like you…. Go forth and not only transform your classrooms but the future of this nation.”

Chairman of Erdiston Teachers’ Training College, Dr. Sylvia Henry, stressed the dual theme of the ceremony, emphasising that “Prepared to Teach, Equipped to Transform” reflects a philosophy where every child can learn something valuable. She noted the urgency of adapting teaching methods amidst current social challenges.

Principal of the College, Dr. Colin Cumberbatch, presented data on the 119 graduates across various programmes, reiterating the college’s pivotal role in education transformation. He celebrated the partnerships with esteemed institutions such as Columbia University, and initiatives like the Village Builders Programme.

Featured speaker, Dr. Kris DeFilippis, offered insights from his observations of Barbadian schools, praising the enduring legacy of free education since Prime Minister Barrow’s historic 1961 declaration. He lauded Prime Minister Mottley’s vision of transformation and introduced his “critical pragmatism” framework as a model for continued advancement.

As the ceremony concluded, the collective sentiment was clear: equipped with innovative knowledge and a profound commitment to educational progress, this graduating cohort is set to lead Barbados into a new era of educational excellence and societal prosperity. (PR/GIS)
